The ability to see the big picture is the ability to see the big picture of a scenario or issues in one’s sphere of leadership.
There are several types of leaders, and their personalities indicate how they tackle issues. Some are leading the way, while others are energising. Some are affirming, inclusive, and modest, whilst others are deliberate, steadfast, or highly demanding in whatever they do.
The personality of the leader will decide if he has the ability to perceive the big picture before making judgments. Some people also fail to see that the ability to see the big picture; to see the big picture is what will assist the organisation move forward and achieve its goals.
In a society where many people blame strategy, leaders, followership, the system, and so on, little attention is frequently paid to the fact that failure occurs when the broad picture is not obvious to everyone, and is not generally understood by those who are involved in making a vision or a goal a reality.
It is critical that a leader realises that it is his or her responsibility to ensure that the management teams with which he or she works have a clear knowledge of the strategy and the organization’s broad picture or vision.
Before addressing the management team, the leader must first examine himself in the mirror to verify that he has attempted to see beyond his own personal wishes, perceptions, and aspirations. Once this is completed, there are practical measures that may be taken to assist build a wide picture and guide everyone forward.
First, the leader must assess the team’s capacity to discuss the big picture. This may begin by establishing a standard and communicating to the public what the larger picture actually is.
To move individuals from the known to the unknown, the leader could ask the management team and their direct subordinates questions that, when answered, demonstrate how well they comprehend the vision.
If management can correctly answer five or six out of ten questions, it demonstrates that there is a high level of awareness and respect for the big picture, and that employees understand where the leader is headed. If they sound like they’re singing from various hymn books, they’re out of sync with the leadership.
The following questions should be posed to management by the leader: Who is the intended audience? This response should provide a prioritised list of target audiences.
What are the services that this organisation intends to deliver, and which ones, if any, should be changed? Which of these should be revised in light of the strategy we’re pursuing?
What kind of value do you propose to our market or customers? Because your company is not the only one in town, people need to understand what value you are offering them and why they should abandon all others in favour of yours.
How does your value proposition distinguish you in the market; what distinguishes your company?
What are the environmental, economic, sociological, and political elements that are crucial to your organization’s strategy?
An irrepressible leader should be able to question individuals about what their division is doing to promote the overarching goal of the organisation if they are in charge of a division. How does the marketing director perceive his division in the context of the larger picture? However, it is not only a department that is vital; everyone has a role to play and is accountable for bringing the vision to fruition.
People who work in an organisation may have just a hazy sense of what the organisation is all about and what it stands for. Good individuals have been known to labour hard, do the wrong thing, and have a distorted view of what the organisation stands for.
An unstoppable leader will make it his mission to help everyone have a better knowledge of the broad picture, just as he does. This will allow the organization’s goal to move ahead, allowing it to hire the right people and place them in the proper places. It also implies that particular departments may be improved by retuning and re-engineering them.
When a leader learns that his or her employees are unable to answer these questions in a way that is consistent with his or her standards, and that they are hesitant to make changes, he or she must recognise the major effect on the organisation.
